WoTW Events – A Rough Guide to Preaching

Approximately 2 dozen people, from a variety of local churches, gathered at Terrington St. Clement Parish Church to attend ‘A Rough Guide to Preaching’. The day had been organised by the Word on the Wash committee, with the purpose of encouraging and equipping all who teach or preach the Bible to do so more effectively. Our speaker was Jonathan Lamb, minister-at large for Keswick Ministries.

In Session 1 we considered the dynamics of preaching, based on Nehemiah 8:1-12. This consisted of an overview of three basic issues in preaching: the centrality of the Bible, the role of the preacher, and the response of the congregation. Session 2 covered the practicalities of putting together a sermon in ways which reflect the heart of the passage. After lunch, we broke into groups for personal study and group discussion, looking at Habakkuk 3:16-19 and 2 Corinthians 4:1-6.

Jonathan’s experience as a preacher and his clear and practical handling of Scripture were greatly appreciated, and all who attended found the day extremely helpful and encouraging. It is hoped that we may be able to arrange similar events in the future.

Quotes from the day:

“enjoyable, instructive and inspiring,”  Robin

“practical and spiritual, and supportive by meeting others,” Barbara
